In Bruges

I managed to squeak in a 3rd movie for the weekend [damn that felt good] and it was "In Bruges". What I read was that it had a sense of humor and was an action flick. But I don't think that does the movie justice. The humor is wickedly dark, from writer/director Martin McDonagh [the guy who wrote all those terrifically fucked up Irish plays "Beauty Queen of Leenane", "A Skull in Connemara", etc...] and the action is a slow build but has you chewing your nails in joyous agony.

Think "Shallow Grave"...

I think the American trailer went too far and gave too much of the film away...and I think it gives the wrong tone of the film. So, have a go at the German language version the trailer. Woo hoo!

Weekend on DVD

What did I watch this weekend? "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep". I'm not normally drawn to a kids' flick but this was more than that. A great fantasy film with cool CGI and terrific acting. Not to mention, impossibly gorgeous cinematography from Scotland. Check out the trailer above.

"Into the Wild" surpasses anything I'd seen before in the way of achingly beautiful outdoor photography. The film is a thoughtful look at a guy coming in to his own in search of the mythical Alaska. I was moved not only by his own journey, but by what the other characters saw in him - their lost youth, dreams, and zest for life. It's a pretty inspiring film and I'll be certainly thinking about it for a while. Check out the trailer above. Oh and it's based on a true story!
