Keane

Going to see the lads this Friday in Oakland. Should be a sweet show. If there was any doubt if a ballad can get a huge croud singing, watch this clip. Gets me every time:

Eye of the Tiger

See? I'm not a complete cynic.

I adore this version of this song. It's the way it was intended to be sung!

R.I.P. Bea Arthur

Bea won the Tony for Best Support Actress in 1966 for her role as Vera Charles, playing Angela Lansbury's best friend in "Mame". She recreated the role for the film version starring Lucille Ball (but the film version was bad!).

Here Bea & Angela sing their duet "Bosom Buddies" in a concert version years later (love the fashions). We'll miss you Bea.

The Helio Sequence

Just 2 guys in the band from Portland, Oregon. They've released a couple of indie albums and will open for Keane in Oakland, May 8 (we're going!).

The video was filmed in and around Portland in the wee hours of the night.

Widmer Brothers beer

I've been a long fan of the microbrew Portland's Widmer. They're consistently good and quite tasty. I bought the case at Costco wanting to try a few new flavors (at a lower price!). Glad to see the brothers making enough for the throngs of Costco fatties.
Broken Halo IPA - a really strong flavor. Delicious actually if the temp outside is below 40 degrees. IPAs are typically stronger than other brews and after just two, I'm not able to operate heavy machinery.
Drop Top Amber Ale - yea, still the bitter beer. I don't know why, but even with the cute bottle this dog needs to be licked by a lesbian. Ick. (who am I kidding? I'll drink it, if it's the last thing I consume!)

Hefeweizen - They're known for this stuff and I can see why. Delish. I'm embarrassed to admit I was only willing to taste Hefe w/ lemon about 3 years ago. Man, what was I missing? When the temp is over 80 outside, DAMN! Heaven in a bottle!

Drifter Pale Ale - I was too impatient to wait for this one to chill, so I drank it warm. I have to admit, I think it was better that way. Can't wait to try this cold.

BTW - the glass in all those pics? "Permanently borrowed it" from a bar in San Francisco.

Winters

A nice afternoon...on a whim...
Picturesque and kinda silly...

Rural Yolo Co, outside Woodland

I couldn't believe my eyes, so I had to stop for a picture. I laughed a bit, then got some mixed emotions. Not sure if I think this is funny any more. Hmm...

Toro vs. Sabritas

Not sure which will win in a taste test, but the Toro chips look way more butch and kick ass. I bought both bags to let them at my taste buds.

Obama - A Lager Man

Just a few months into his presidency and it's official: he's a lager man.

I knew a beer photo would be appearing sooner than later. This one was taken at a basketball game, Bulls vs. Wizards.

I think a Guinness snap is just around the corner.

Pizza & "Battlestar Gallactica"

What has been a Friday night ritual is now over. For the series finale, I wanted to do it right and get the best damned pizza, which meant Luigi's. The Luigi Special (above) is delicious, with a thin crunchy crust like cracker bread and homemade sausage. And picking up this pie didn't disappoint either: a bit of a rough-and-tumble Raider Nation crowd with employees on some sort of work program (I swear I saw a few ankle bracelets).

The finale of "Battlestar" was satisfying. The last 30 minutes were kind of mind-blowing. Green pastures? Farming? Kind of glad that Tyrol (above) finally snapped the head of that Indian Cylon. That bitch deserved it, even if Tyrol's dead wife was a total nag.
And yes, my favorite character is now living in the Highlands - I think that means he's in Scotland! Aaron Douglas's Tyrol went from blue collar every-man to butch-as-hell Cylon. Man, that was hot! The show (and especially Aaron) will sorely be missed.

St. Patrick's Day 2009

The beer cooler, holding a butt-load of Guinness!

Spinach caravan sandwiches - quite tasty, of which I became addicted during the evening.

Green salad - didn't try it. According to my colon, I should have.

Didn't try this either. Seems to be some sort of catering secret at work, a food condom under the meatballs to make clean-up easy. I'm all for that!

Mini burgers - chicken I think - BURP!

Delicious pasta salad - I managed to avoid the bell peppers - was still burping my lunch. BTW, I oughta get my GI checked....

Great Remake - Creep

Put away the razor blades. Turn off the lights. And push play...

What did Lea say?

The voice, the attitude, the foul mouth... damn, I love that voice...

I'm Every Woman

I just needed a cleansing moment. Thanks girls!

Trader Joe's commercial

This dude is quite talented. He shot this on his Palm Treo. It's quite clever. And going to Trader Joe's often, he is spot on!

R.I.P. Blossom Dearie

Not much of a "video" but the singing? Heaven!

Grammy 09: Brief Recap

I could only stomach about an hour of the Grammy telecast. Man, that was some boring shit, for the most part. Here's a brief summary of what I saw:

U2's rocking opening number - can't wait until that CD drops.

Coldplay just seemed tepid compared to U2 and down right embarassing in those costumes. I love Chris and boys and much as anyone, but damn, get a stylist.

Carrie Underwood. Loved, loved, loved this song. Drinking, being a slut, waking up married... everything a good country song should offer, plus rock n roll and a female guitar solo. Carrie's legs rivaled Beyonce!

Whitney Houston was high, I'm sure of it. It's just so sad to watch her. And that dress? Um, I've seen it like 100 times before on women who can fit into it (get the right bra, Whit!)

Woo hoo to Robert & Allison! Best Fucking Album of the year!

Third in the Polls

Now THAT'S the kind of politicking I like to see! Just stop with the locals and throw one back. I'm eagerly awaiting the pictures of Prez Obama swallowing gulps of Guinness in Ireland, whiskey in Kentucky, and maybe some vino in Napa. It's gonna happen, I know. He's not like his mother fucking predecessor.
CAPTION: Running third in polls in the race for prime minister, Israeli Defense Minister and Labor Party leader Ehud Barak stops for a cold one at a pedestrian mall in Rishon Lezion, Israel.

Free Grand Slam

Denny's gave out free Grand Slam breakfasts today, causing pandemonium at many restaurants. Come on, you fucking cheap bastards! The meal is like $6 for fuck sake! Stay home, make your own. Or better still, eat some fucking fruit! Would it kill you to try some bran cereal with skim milk?

If you squint real hard, you can see these 2 fat kids heading over from McDonald's for some more fat, cholesterol, childhood obesity and imminent death before the age of 25.

Fucking fat Americans! Bring on the Type 2 diabetes! The pharmaceutical companies and morticians need you! Stimulate that fucking fat-assed economy!

Thompson Twins - "Love On Your Side"

I’ll try to not over-state this, but this is the most transporting song EVER! It’s a visceral reaction even. I listen to this song and – SHAZAM - I’m back in high school. The 80s were mainly crap but this song (and the Twins) is brilliant!

This performance from Top of the Pops – I can’t resist it. Tom Bailey’s hair might be secondary to Mike Score’s hair (Flock of Seagulls), but it’s equally as impressive. Watch his delicious synth work at about 1:08 in the video – defines the term “totally 80s”.

Alannah is too ridiculous to not be seen as divine. Her inability to dance is terrific. And her…shall I call it, “drum solo” is sublime (in a perverse kind of way). It’s about 2:00 minutes in.

Let’s not forget the swagger from little Joe Leeway. Every white middle class kid wanted to be him – even if he was black!

“Hold Me Now”, “Doctor, Doctor”, “Lay Your Hands On Me”… all prom songs.

Going to my Happy Place now...

Inauguration 2009

Just some random thoughts on the topic.

Michelle's coat was fantastic! Regal, elegant, yet functional. And the gloves matched!

The girls, Malia and Sasha looked nifty too. I especially like the orange:

I know she's a legend and needs to keep her head warm, but was that bow really necessary?

I always like seeing Bill and Al together. Makes misty for the good old days of the Gay 90s:

It must have been riveting to see the festivities live, but my guess is these two poor souls didn't have much fun. Unless there's liquor under those blankets:

Gavin and Arnold? Huh? Get the hell out of here:

Nice to see Teddy is well enough to attend. Good for you, ya old goat!

My favorite picture of them all, seeing the Bushes on their way OUT! Good riddance!
